Real talk. In the next 3–5 years, many roles in athlete development pathways will be redundant. Not because those coaches lacked passion or experience — but because they didn't figure out how their role would evolve during the AI revolution.
The coaches who thrive won't be the ones who know the most about the game. They'll be the ones who master the human work: trust, connection, meaning. The work AI can't touch.
This workbook won't give you all the answers. But it will help you ask better questions — and use AI to handle everything it does better than you, so you can invest in everything it can't do.
AI is a tool, not a coach. But it can give your coaching and practice the leading edge.
What's inside
Chapter 1 — Introduction: Your New Reality An honest look at what AI is doing to athlete development pathways and what it means for your role. This isn't scaremongering — it's a clear-eyed account of where the sorting process is already happening, and what you can do about it.
Chapter 2 — About You First: Build Your Compass Before you guide athletes toward meaning and growth, you need to find your own. This chapter helps you define what you stand for, what you're chasing, and what kind of coach you're choosing to be — then teaches you how to feed that into AI so it amplifies your voice, not dilutes it.
Chapter 3 — Athlete Profiles: The Four Pillars Framework A whole-athlete development framework that goes well beyond sports skills and physical conditioning. Use AI to spot patterns you'd miss — but interpret them through relational intelligence and your compass, not just algorithms.
Chapter 4 — Co-Creating IDPs: Individual Development Plans That Actually Work Turn athlete profiles into development plans that honour both performance and personhood. Includes a step-by-step process for athlete meetings — how to structure them, what to ask, how to listen, and how to use AI to prepare without outsourcing the relationship.
Chapter 5 — The Hard Conversations: Prepare, Hold, Follow Through The athlete who didn't make the team. The player returning from injury who's physically cleared but emotionally shattered. The parent demanding answers. The athlete you need to cut. AI can't have these conversations for you — but it can help you prepare for them as the coach you want to be, not the reactive version pressure creates. Includes five real pathway scenarios with conversation guides.
Chapter 6 — Making It Work: Practical Strategies for Real Contexts The roadblocks that stop good frameworks becoming practice — limited time, large squads, institutional resistance. Honest strategies, not ideal-world solutions. Includes an implementation planning guide.
Appendix — Ready-to-Use Forms Getting to Know You athlete profile, Four Pillars self-assessment checklist, and IDP worksheet. Copy and use immediately.
Throughout: AI prompts that actually work
Every chapter includes tested AI prompts to help you define your compass, build athlete profiles, generate IDP drafts, and prepare for hard conversations. The prompts teach AI your philosophy — so it works for you, not instead of you.
Who this is for
Individual (1 copy) — NZD $37 Coaches, strength and conditioning staff, sports psychologists, welfare managers, agents, and academy staff working with athletes in any development context — professional pathways, high school, college, club, or academy. Whether you're managing 25 athletes or 5, full-time or a part-time volunteer, the principles are the same. If you work with humans in sport, this is for you.
Organisational Bundle (20 copies) — NZD $195 Academy directors, head coaches, and programme leads who want a shared development framework and common language across their entire staff — not just one or two key people. The real value of this workbook compounds when your whole team is working from the same compass. At $9.75 per person, it costs less than most coaches spend on coffee in a week — and unlike a half-day CPD workshop, your staff can revisit it every season. That's $545 saved on the full individual price. If your athletes are already using Your Edge, this is the staff-side counterpart that makes the village work.
The stakes
If coaches and practitioners don't evolve, their role shrinks to managing AI recommendations while real development happens elsewhere. If athletes are treated as data points instead of humans, they won't just underperform — they'll collapse under pressure no algorithm predicted.
Your edge is what you do with the time AI gives you back.
About the author
Dr Pip Thomas has worked with athletes through selection anxiety, injury comebacks, family crises, performance slumps, and career transitions. She has sat with teenagers and parents struggling with pressures they can't name. She has also failed athletes by being too focused on performance to see the human who wasn't quite ready for that big step overseas.
Her research — published in Frontiers in Sport and Active Living (2024) and the Journal of Sports Science (2026) — focuses on emerging athlete transitions and social support in professional pathways. This workbook comes from that lived experience: the successes, the failures, the AI prompts, and the athlete stories.
Real talk. Genuine care. Small things matter. "It takes a village to raise an athlete."
